The race worthy of a Russian mountain
Yesterday, the paddock had a race for the roller coasters. A Grand Prix that confirmed Max Verstappen's grip, ruthless in the lead, but also offered his share of unexpected dramas and stories. Oscar Piastri didn't even have time to show his colors, eliminated in a fight from the start. And Carlos Sainz wrote a history page: first podium with Williams, a strong symbol for a stable that had not tasted such a party for years.
Verstappen, the boss without sharing
There are days when we wonder if anyone can really worry Max Verstappen. The Dutchman still delivered a masterclass, imposing his rhythm as if he was driving on a parallel track. Perfect tire management, no mistakes, a clear strategy. When Verstappen starts, it's often for a demonstration. Yesterday was no exception.
Behind him, the peloton shook, but in front, it was a one-man show. The triple world champion makes his way, and the records continue to pile up.
Piastri, the cold shower
The big loser of the day is Oscar Piastri. The promising Australian, expected as one of the drivers of the race, did not even pass the first turn. Violent contact, a snatched suspension, and the young McLaren pilot already on the side. Rageous, frustrating, especially when you know its potential on this type of circuit.
He didn't hide his disappointment from the microphone: « It's hard to swallow. We had a competitive car, but there's nothing to do with it. » Hard hit, but extra experience in the big yard.
Sainz and Williams, a podium that resonates
And then there is the image that will remain. Carlos Sainz, hanging smile, bottle of champagne in hand, enjoying his first podium with Williams. Yes, Williams. The legendary stable has fallen into the shadows for too long, often confined to the bottoms of the classification, finally sees light thanks to his new strong man.
The Madrilene, solid, opportunistic, took advantage of the abandons and battles behind him to place his FW in the top 3. But beyond the raw result, it is the symbol that strikes. Williams climbs the slope slowly but surely, and this podium sounds like a renaissance.
A season that simmers
Between Verstappen's domination, Piastri's bad luck and Sainz's fairy tale with Williams, this Grand Prix recalled what the F1 knows best: surprise. Piastri having not scored, Norris having not been able to take advantage of the opportunity, Max still in the retro of the McLaren, the end of the season sssalt hot.
Williams regains voice, McLaren grins teeth, and Ferrari like Mercedes is still looking for the click. One thing is certain: yesterday we saw both the strength of the champion and the brilliance of the outsiders.
